Freestyle or front crawl swimming technique uses any kind of stroke or method. Regularly, freestyle is used in competitions but there are no actual conditions or regulations on how will it must be swam.

It would be recommended that you learn freestyle swim technique. You will surely appreciate the feeling of gliding through the water. The time it takes to swim each lap will be lessened as you learn the method. You will also learn to swim faster, longer and will lessen the strokes.

Keep in mind that in order to learn freestyle swim technique, you should develop the different methods.

The most basic method to do is the body position. You must establish the correct body position to attain the proper flow in swimming. You must use the functions of your hips, belly, back and the chest. Rotate your body from one side to the other while your head is fixated. Move in the water like a fish and reaching onwards in every stroke, this will maximize your efficiency in swimming.

The next easy learn freestyle swim technique is by breathing. Having a proper way in breathing will enable you to have a smooth stroke and you will not be struggling while gasping for air. Your face must be downwards and your breathing is done through the mouth. Turn your head from the side from the start of the recovering arm. Your head must be tilted back at the end of the stroke then repeat the sequence again. Take a breath every 3rd recovery so that you will inhale from the other side.

The next method is the arm cycle if you are eager to learn freestyle swim technique. Pushing, pulling and recovery are the steps in arm cycle. Pulling is the arched movement of your arms from the water line to the chest level. Keep your arms straight and your hands must be pointed to your body’s center and downward. Make your hands cupped firmly when you pull your hands through the water. Make your fingers slightly apart then complete the pull by pushing. It will pull you back to the waters level. Now, the palm must be stirred backwards through the water just under the body at the start and in your body’s side at the final push. The next is the recovery. It is a position where the elbow is in arched towards the swimming direction. Practice the elbow movement by skimming the water using your fingers. Try to relax the arm while you are in recovery.

The next important method is the leg kick. The leg kick controls your body position it the water, while your arms will push your body forward. The proper timing must be established between your arms and legs because it is very important for perfecting your stroke. Your legs kick must be in a flapping style to make an ideal 6 cycles. You must remain horizontal in the water to keep your legs from falling behind. Make small splashes using your legs to slightly break the surface of the water.

Therefore, it is proper for you to practice always the methods of freestyle.

Alexander Popov Freestyle Stroke Technique

logo

The swimmer in this video is Alexander Popov, the great freestyle sprinter. This tape is run in slow motion so you can really see how deep and smooth his pull pattern is. Notice the triangle elbow position that keeps his hands deep, but does not let them cross over the centerline of his body. Also, like the previous swimmers, his head position is solid. Like martizaCorriea, he swims in this sample with a smooth 6 beat kick.
